These papers consist chiefly of correspondence, speeches, and miscellaneous subject files. The material covers mainly the period 1954-1963, when Admiral Beakley commanded the Anti-Submarine Force, Atlantic Fleet; served as Assistant Chief of Naval Operations for Fleet Operations and Readiness; commanded the Seventh Fleet; and was a senior officer on the staff of the Atlantic Command and Atlantic Fleet. Documentation is included on USS Triton which performed the first submerged circumnavigation of the globe in 1960.

Vice Admiral, U.S. Navy. Beakley, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, was designated a naval aviator in November 1926. He served on USS Utah, destroyer Mahan, and with squadrons attached to USS Langley, seaplane tender Wright, and cruisers Trenton and Marblehead. From 1935-1937, he was assigned to USS Lexington.
